Glass Swing-Top Bottles
These are our go to for bottling beer. They have a specialised ceramic top which attaches to the bottle with a rubber seal to preserve your beer and allow for high levels of carbonation. The best part is that they are fully reusable – no need to buy new bottle caps for every brew.
Using swing-tops is pretty simple, after filling up each bottle, the top clamps down and seals, and that’s it! No need for additional parts or bottle cappers.
Our tip: when you receive your swing-tops, the ceramic top will need to be attached to the bottle. Start by placing the top into the bottle first, then attaching the wires to the bottle. This avoids attaching it the wrong way around.
Plastic Screw-Cap Bottles
These bottles are a great alternative to the swing-tops. They are cheaper, lightweight and not likely to break if the beer is over-carbonated. They also eliminate the need for a bottle capper.
On bottling day, the caps will need to be sterilised and simply screwed tightly onto the bottle.
Both our glass and plastic bottles are amber in colour, protecting the beer from UV rays which causes the beer to diminish in flavour.
Recycled Beer Bottles
If you don’t fancy buying new bottles, then recycling old beer bottles is a great way to reuse any empty bottles you have lying around, and great for the environment.
With this method, you’ll also need to purchase fresh bottle caps and a bottle capper. The caps aren’t reusable so you’ll need fresh caps for each batch. Both the bottles and the caps need to be cleaned and sterilised thoroughly, and then use the bottle capper to seal the cap securely to the bottle.
If you’re collecting bottles, you’ll need 15 x 330ml bottles for the 5 litres of beer our kits make.
